Welcome! 

My hope for this blog is to create multimodal compositions persuading readers to understand the importance of allowing different modes of writing in the classroom. The journey will begin with five blog posts about the research literature explaining multimodal composition and its specific aspects within this project:
Overview/Definition of Multimodal Writing
Disciplinary Literacy in ELA using Multimodal Compositions
Multimodality and 21st Century Literacy -Creativity 
Multimodality and 21st Century Literacy- Communication 
Engaging Students of all Backgrounds with Multimodal Composition

Inquiry will then lead to lesson implementation in my middle school English/Language Arts classroom using digital literacies discovered through the previous blog posts. 
My real "why" behind this project is each and every diverse student I have the privilege to teach; multimodal composition opens up doors for all of them to use their voices in choosing how they creatively communicate their learning.

Multimodal Writing and 21st Century Literacy of Communication

One of the most important aspects students need to understand about communication is its reciprocal aspects; it is important that they not only are able to clearly communicate their thoughts in various modes but also effectively receive communication from others through multiple modes.  The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) guides teachers on 21st Century Literacies, such as communication.   English/Language Arts Disciplinary Literacy and Multimodal Composition                 Before this semester, I had never heard of disciplinary literacy. Being a secondary English/language arts teacher, I knew my discipline and followed the standards I was supposed to teach. However, now I realize that I was missing so many opportunities to make ELA learning authentic to the world around my students and their futures.
